Our Story

The Tambarina story began in 1995 when 2 chefs from Mozambique had the vision of bringing the mouth-watering fare that Mozambique is known for, to Komatipoort, for locals and visitors to the area to enjoy. Turns out, it was a great idea!

Tambarina Restaurant became a local favorite and drew the support and appreciation of many guests from around the world too. One family in particular, made a family tradition of their annual visits, and even had ‘their’ favorite table in the corner of the patio… Little did your present day hosts, Hannes and Annelize, realize that one day they would be the ones nurturing the Tambarina brand and helping others to make special memories as they enjoyed special meals there.

In 2012 they became the new owners of Tambarina Restaurant, and although it was initially managed by someone else, their journey made it possible for them to be totally hands-on in 2014.

So, you can understand why Tambarina is so special – it’s personal. It’s about people, good food, and making special memories to treasure.

It goes without saying that the reason Hannes and Annelize brought their family to Komatipoort for holidays for so many years before moving here, was to visit Kruger Park. So, it’s not surprising that their love of The Kruger and the local wildlife, led to a desire to share that with others on safaris. Saseke Safaris was a shared initiative of Hannes, and his close friend and excpetional field guide, Jaco Buys. Jaco was based at Sabi Sands in Kruger Park for many years, and in 2016, he was awarded the accolade of Sabi Sands Field Guide of the Year.

Saseke, which means ‘Beautiful One’, was the name of a special female leopard in the Northern Sabi Sands region, and as a tribute to her, Hannes and Jaco named their business Saseke Safaris. Again, Saseke Safaris is personal, and years later, it has become even more so for Hannes, as Jaco succumbed to cancer. Today Hannes honors Jaco’s memory and their shared dream, with safaris that are unforgettable.

Every long-time Kruger Park addict will tell you that there is a very specific vibe that authentic African safari accommodation has. The Tambarina brand has captured the essence of that authentic safari vibe beautifully, and combined it with the warmth of local cultures and modern comforts to bring guests accommodation that makes it hard to leave.

The Tambarina Guest House shares its location with the Tambarina Restaurant, giving you the option of delicious meals right on your doorstep.

Tambarina is not just a brand – for many people, it’s woven into the threads of local life,  special traditions and memories. For others, it’s the magical ingredient in their bush holidays – the place they dream of going back to when Kruger Park calls to their wild hearts.

Hannes, Annelize and their team work hard to ensure that their service and your experience is every bit as personal and special as their own love of the area, that led them to curate the Tambarina brand into what it is today.
